Anesthesiology expert witness

Cardiac & thoracic anesthesia expert witness

Review by a practicing cardiothoracic anesthesiologist of open-heart, aortic, thoracic and high-risk non-cardiac surgery — where small decisions about hemodynamics, bleeding and ventilation carry large consequences.

Cardiac anesthesia is a subspecialty for a reason. Patients undergoing coronary bypass, valve or aortic surgery often have limited cardiac reserve, and the anesthesiologist manages induction, cardiopulmonary bypass, separation from bypass, coagulation and transfusion, and the transition to intensive care — frequently under rapidly changing conditions.

Dr. Steudel has practiced cardiothoracic anesthesia in academic and private settings since the 1990s. His research at Massachusetts General Hospital focused on inhaled nitric oxide, pulmonary vascular disease and right-heart function, which gives him particular depth in cases involving pulmonary hypertension and right ventricular failure.

Matters are evaluated against the standard of care at the time, the information available to the treating team, and the physiology of the individual patient.

What the review answers

Questions Dr. Steudel addresses for counsel

  1. Was the preoperative cardiac evaluation adequate for the planned procedure?
  2. Were monitoring choices appropriate to the patient’s risk?
  3. Were changes in blood pressure, rhythm or filling pressures recognized and treated in time?
  4. Was coagulation and blood product management consistent with the clinical picture?
  5. Is the adverse outcome medically attributable to anesthetic management, the surgery or the underlying disease?

Every opinion is based on the records reviewed and the standard of care applicable at the time. The analysis may support, limit or contradict the initial theory of the case — and counsel is told so early.
